FarmFest Spotlight: Paul’s Top 3 Tips for Controlling Rat’s Tail Grass with a Redback Weedwiper

At Farmfest 2025, we caught up with Paul, a Redback Weedwiper owner from Queensland. He shared his real-world experience in tackling one of the toughest pasture weeds: Rat’s Tail Grass.

Paul has been putting his Weedwiper to the test on his property with impressive results. In our latest video, Paul goes through his three key tips for using a Redback Weedwiper and explains how it has helped him control Rat’s Tail Grass. Additionally, Paul also offers to show viewers his own Weedwiper in action, and the results he has achieved on his property.

Paul’s Top 3 Tips for Killing Rat’s Tail Grass With A Weedwiper

While visiting us at FarmFest, Paul kindly shared his three biggest takeaways:

Graze first – Ideally, bring stock in to graze the paddock before weedwiping. This keeps desirable pasture low and ensures the Weedwiper makes maximum contact with Rat’s Tail Grass.

Chemical Mix – His recommended chemical use and measures for the best results.

Use a Spreader – Use plain kitchen detergent to keep track of where you have been. This leaves a visible trail on the wiped weeds, helping you keep track of where you’ve been and avoid double-passing.

Why Rat’s Tail Grass Matters

Rat’s Tail Grass is one of Queensland’s most invasive pasture weeds. It spreads quickly and offers poor feed quality. As a result, if left unchecked, it can dominate pastures, reduce carrying capacity, and cause long-term productivity issues. Effective control requires good timing, the right tools, and proven techniques, and that’s where the Redback Weedwiper makes a difference.

Paul’s Redback Weedwiper has given him a targeted and cost-effective way to control Rat’s Tail Grass without damaging his desirable pasture. In other words, it has allowed him to keep productivity high while keeping costs down.
